M-DISC Blu-ray has a lifespan of 1,332 years
Having a collection of 1,000 plus data dating back couple
of decades back, I had no idea what to do with the ever growing data collection
from videos, photos, music among others that would be glad to pass on to my
grandchildren. That fear has now vanished after details emerged of the M-DISC
that will allow data owners to back up the entire digital world for future safe
storage with a capacity of 25GB at a time. Many will agree that one of the
biggest challenge our generation faces is an increasingly digital lifestyle as
a result of the amount of data we create on daily basis. Ranging from my
movies, photos, video clips and my ever-expanding music library, the solution
has come at the right time. There are number of different storage solutions
available in the market that continues to grow but they have plenty of
drawbacks. M-DISC Blu-Ray is developed by RITEK and come August, it will be
sold under Memorex, Imation and TDK brand names.
On average, computers, smartphones
and tablet's hard drive have the capacity to fill up and degrade over time. The
cloud technology uses a vast array of different methods of saving data although
I don’t see the technology withstanding the taste of time and are also
vulnerable to security lapses and data hungry hackers. The M-DISC Blu-ray was
developed by RITEK and can hold 25GB of information. The solution works very
well with a standard Blu-ray drive and could last for the next 1000 years
according to the people behind it. M-DISC Blu-Ray was independently tested
through ISO/IEC 10995 Test Standard. The test is meant to expose optical media
to extreme humidity and temperature to accurately establish its lifespan and
according to the tests, M-DISC Blu-Ray in theory survived for 1,332 years.
Having been in technology for a long time, I don’t want to believe that there
is a 1,332-year lifespan solution in place for my data storage problem. I find
it very bold for the company to make such a pledge although of course its one
that is difficult to disagree with.
